Childhood Obesity Tip

• It is estimated that 24% of American children are overweight and another 18% are obese. Childhood obesity predisposes to hypertension, elevated cholesterol, Type 2 Diabetes, liver and kidney disease, and increases risk for adult-onset cardiovascular disease. Children are considered overweight if they exceed the 85th percentile for Body Mass Index (BMI), and obese if they exceed the 95th percentile. The BMI is a simple calculation your physician can provide, and is a standard part of an annual well child check. Poor cardiovascular fitness is the most significant risk factor for obesity and weight gain. It is for these reasons that current recommendations are children participate in one hour of physical activity every day.
