One of the most common complaints from patients is knee pain. Patients often complain of pain in the knee when going up and down stairs or when getting up from a sitting position. Most cases of this kind of knee pain are caused from the knee cap tracking off center – or – misalignment. When the kneecap is misaligned, or slightly out of position, the physical stress isn't evenly distributed throughout the knee joint. Typically with this condition there is little or no swelling and the knee does not lock up. The treatment can include: exercises to strengthen the quadriceps (the muscles in front of the thigh), anti inflammatory medications, icing, and physical therapy. In some cases of persistent knee pain, surgery is required.
